The reported imminent arrival of multiple Covid-19 vaccines is an exciting and welcomed development. Vaccination is a critical tool in getting the virus under control, which is the only way to restore normalcy to our schools, state and local governments, and the economy in general. Because AFSCME represents many front line workers, we have been invited to participate in a webinar on December 2 at 6:00PM EST to hear from trusted experts on how the vaccine approval process is being conducted. If you wish, feel free to share the attached information with your staff and local leaders.
AFSCME is closely monitoring the pending approval process for vaccine candidates. As the attached lit piece explains, this event is designed to provide you with information about vaccine approval from expert and unbiased sources whose qualifications, AFSCME believes, are unimpeachable. Though AFSCME is notifying you of this event and encourages your participation, our union does not intend to endorse a vaccine that has not yet been approved nor yet validated by scientific consensus. And individuals, of course, should make their own decisions regarding vaccination based on the best information available.
Given the possibility that vaccines will be available for front line workers as early as December, we think it is important that AFSCME leaders and staff who have substantial member contact be well informed about the process of development, distribution, and vaccination.
